Frequently Asked Questions
What training methods do you use?
Life with a dog should be enjoyable, not stressful. At Ruff Diamond, I help you build calm, confident, and well-mannered dogs using kind, effective training that works in everyday life. Training focuses on clear communication, realistic expectations, and practical skills you can use both at home and out in the real world.
What experience and qualifications do you have as a dog trainer?
With over 20 years’ experience and a passion for helping owners, I’ll be with you every step of the way. I am a Member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and hold a Foundation Degree in Canine Behaviour and Training. I am fully insured and committed to continuing professional development. My approach is rooted in real-life training and supporting both dogs and their owners with confidence.
What dog training services do you offer?
I offer the following training services:
- Group training classes – Small, supportive classes with a maximum of four dogs.
- One-to-one training sessions – Tailored specifically to you, your dog, and your individual goals.
- Online coaching – Flexible support if you cannot attend in person or prefer remote guidance.
Can you help with real-life issues like pulling on the lead, barking, recall or visitors to the house?
Yes. I work with a wide range of everyday challenges including loose lead walking, recall, barking, jumping up, focus around distractions, visitors to the house, and aggression. Training focuses on practical, achievable solutions that fit into daily life and support long-term change.
What happens if my dog is over-excited, nervous, or struggles to focus?
This is very common and completely normal. Training is adapted to suit your dog’s emotional needs, confidence, and ability to concentrate. There is no expectation of perfection, and I will help you to overcome this at your dog’s pace, ensuring sessions are calm, supportive, and achievable.
How long does it usually take to see progress?
Every dog and owner is different, so timescales can vary. Most people notice small improvements quite quickly, while more established behaviours take longer to change. Training focuses on steady, realistic progress rather than quick fixes, and I will always guide you on what to expect.
How do I know which training approach is right for me and my dog?
This depends on your dog’s age, behaviour, confidence, and your own goals. Group classes suit dogs who are comfortable learning around others, while one-to-one sessions are ideal for more specific challenges or individual support. Online coaching is a great option for flexibility or distance. You can contact me via email, WhatsApp, phone, or book a free call to talk this through.
Can you help if I don’t live in the area?
Yes, I offer online coaching and remote support for owners who are not local. This includes guidance, structured exercises and feedback to help you make progress with your dog from home. So, I can help wherever you are.
What support do I get between sessions?
One-to-one clients benefit from support via WhatsApp between sessions. This allows you to ask questions, check progress, and make small adjustments to training so you feel confident and supported throughout the process. Group classes are given homework each week so there is clear direction on what to work on.
How do I get started or book a session?
Group classes can be booked directly through the website. If you are interested in one-to-one training or online coaching, or are unsure which approach is right for you and your dog, you are welcome to get in touch or book a free call to discuss your options.
