My teenage dog just freaked out at a plastic bag — is that normal?

Yes, totally normal and here’s why.
At around 6–14 months, many dogs go through changes that are referred to as a second fear period. Things they were previously fine with, for example bins, bags, or people in hats might suddenly seem scary.
It can feel like your confident pup is regressing, but this phase is temporary.
Your job? Support them through it.
Stay calm.
Don’t force them to approach the scary thing.
Let them look, process, and choose.
Reward bravery — even small steps.
This stage often passes with patience and positive experiences.
If your dog’s fear is lingering or escalating, it’s worth getting some tailored support.
